Social Media May Not Be Necessarily Evil Per Say

Let’s imagine for a second that you are in a robbery scene. The robbers are fully armed with sophisticated weapons.

I bet you would be in the worst state of mind and all your physical organs would be tensed. The reality of death and the afterlife would come alive in your minds. Some of the religious folks would be saying your last prayers and confess all the wrong you have done.  Fortunately for you, the police arrives the scene with the same or better sophisticated ammunitions, gets the whole messy situation under control and collects unarms the armed robbers. How exactly would you feel at that point? Those who have been in such a situations might relate better.  Immediately the weapons are taken off the robbers’ hand, you have some form of boldness and confidence. Some loquacious fellow might start to cuss out the robbers to their faces. Point is there is a sign of relief; you are no longer under that tension.

This is just an illustration of the effect of social media. You may ask me what social media has to do with this scenario. I will explain it right away. Social media is the gun in the hands of both the armed robbers attacking you and the police officers that are protecting you.

This means social media is as neutral as water depending on your perspective.  It can either be a shield or a sword.  It all depends on what you want it to represent.  I must confess that social media could be a really bad tool especially because it gives all sort of wrong and falsified information. However the point to note is the fact that there are thousands of people that have used this same social media to promote good intentions and it has influenced their life or business greatly. Social media can take the shape of your heart- it can be your voice. You can create an image of yourself that you want the world to see or you can build a world for yourself on social media.

We are basically flooded with myriad of information on the internet. Most may be confusing, some may be delusional and a lot of others are false. Therefore there is a need to start paying attention to the information that you allow to seep into your eyes and into your eyes. Never believe everything you see on social media. Make sure it is adding your life in a positive manner. Try as much as you can to be in control of social media and don’t allow it control you. Here are some productive things you can do with social media:

• Medium for evangelism. People like Nathanielblow, orangewriter and a few others to mention have been able to garner followers even with the fact that it is God they talk about. Don’t be ashamed to show case your Jesus culture

• Advertise your business and brand. Many businesses have recorded tremendous success through the use of social media. Connect with people customers. Also you must ensure that you relate with your customers well so as to avoid bad reviews which is bad for your business.

• Lend a voice. Talk about societal issues such as the ills and misdemeanors of the society, political issues, business, entertainment, opinions, articles and many more. However you have to be careful not to talk about really sensitive matters that you are not sure of against a person, hence you want to verify the authenticity of the information you are giving out.

“Social media is something of a double-edged sword. At its best, social media offers unprecedented opportunities for marginalized people to speak and bring much needed attention to the issues they face. At its worst, social media also offers ‘everyone’ an unprecedented opportunity to share in collective outrage without reflection.” Roxane Gay

  1. Truly said. Social media has mared many and made many others, yet it remains the most important neccessity beside all that is neccesary. Imagine a world with no social media, it would be a sordid monochromous existence.
